Pocket Diapers are Easy to Use!
Pocket Diapers are one of the easiest modern cloth diapering systems to use. These diapers do not require a diaper cover or anything extra. They look similar to the more familiar disposable diaper, and fasten on very easily. The diaper consists of a pocket and an insert.
The pocket has a waterproof outer layer that prevents any liquid from escaping. The inner layer of the pocket is a soft lining, usually fleece, that wicks the moisture away from your baby's bum and into the insert beneath. The insert is "stuffed" between the two layers through a pocket at the back of the waist. The insert can be made of many different fabrics, but it is usually highly absorbent.
The benefit of a pocket diaper is that you can easily customize the absorbency by adding a doubler, second insert, or larger insert to the pocket.
Pocket diapers can fasten with snaps, or hook & look closures. Some manufacturers offer both closures, while others choose only one type of closure. As a rule, snaps are more durable than hook & loop closures. However, hook & loop closures are usually easier to fasten. This makes hook & loop a popular choice for daddy's, grandparents, day care, and babysitters.
Caring for your pocket diapers is easy - but may very slightly depending on the fabric or manufactuer. Most pocket diapers need to have the soiled insert removed from the pocket before the wash cycle. You may choose to pre-stuff your clean pocket diapers, or to stuff the pockets as you use them. Some pocket diapers may have the insert attached at one end so the insert is always with the pocket. Other pocket diapers may have a design that allows the insert to aggitate out during the wash cycle, so that you do not have to remove the isnert prior to washing.
